Course Development (Faculty)

SUSTAINABILITY COURSE DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS

Sustainability can be infused into courses in just about any discipline. To learn how to do so, we invite faculty from across the campus to join us for a series of professional development workshops aimed at helping you define and develop new or revised courses with a sustainability focus in your discipline area. Our hope is that such courses will be offered in AY 2024-25 and beyond, will be designated as an elective course for the Sustainability Minor, and will introduce students taking them to concepts in sustainability to which they might not otherwise be exposed.

It’s never too late to join in. You may view recordings of any past workshops you may have missed, attend upcoming workshops in person, and apply for course development grant funding. If you think you might be interested, please let us know here. Details follow.

COURSE DEVELOPMENT GRANTS

Regular Notre Dame Faculty (T&R or TPAC) may apply for a course development grant for work leading to a new or revised undergraduate course with a sustainability focus that will be offered on a regular basis on the ND main campus in AY 2024-25 and beyond. You may request up to $6000 for summer 2024 salary and/or materials. Funding allocations will give first priority to courses that reach the broadest range of students (e.g., an intro course open to all majors will get priority over an upper division course limited to a particular major). Funding allocations do NOT depend on how well developed your ideas are at this point. Applications (link below) may be submitted at any time and will be evaluated on a rolling basis beginning on November 15, 2023.

INSTRUCTOR

The instructor for our workshops is Dr. Grace Wang, Academic Program Director of the Center for Sustainability Education at Western Washington University. Her Center is sponsored by AASHE, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, for the express purpose of supporting faculty members in integrating sustainability into their course offerings. She will be joining us via Zoom at the three one-hour workshops and in-person at the culminating workshop.
