Dr. Juan Carlos Munoz will introduce CEDEUS, an interdisciplinary research Center on sustainable urban development in Chile that was launched in 2013. CEDEUS seeks to contribute to the debate on the main urban sustainability challenges that Chilean cities face in the twenty-first century. Its principal goal is to understand urban dynamics, instruments and decision-making processes for developing sustained and equitable improvements in the quality of life in urban areas, based on a recognition of the social demands in, and the biophysical boundaries of Chilean cities. CEDEUS seeks to become a space for knowledge generation and exchange, oriented towards improving the quality of life in urban areas. In this talk the path followed by CEDEUS in its 8 years of life will be followed. highlighting the most significant research milestones iand public policy contributions. The talk will focus mostly on the environment related research and impacts.  

Dr. Munoz is a professor at the Department of Transport Engineering and Logistics of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, where he is the Director of the Bus Rapid Transit Centre of Excellence (www.brt.cl) and of the multidisciplinary Centre of Sustainable Urban Development (www.cedeus.cl). Has been a member of the Board of Metro of Santiago and of Valparaiso in Chile. He has also been a frequent advisor to the government on public transport issues.
